In her own words
What life taught me about leadership
Annelize cares about connection, and about leadership that carries people through challenges and builds workplaces they want to be part of.
I was appointed as a people manager in my early twenties. The title came before the understanding. Being responsible for others inspired me to study the leadership qualities I wanted to develop and consider how I showed up for the people around me.
Twenty years on, I am still learning. Self-awareness helps me recognise where I need to grow, lead with empathy and model the behaviours that allow others to show up with vulnerability and authenticity.
Immigration and parenting challenged me in different ways. Moving across countries and navigating new seasons of life led me to question what mattered, establish my core values and develop a clearer sense of purpose. What I recognised was how much this learning applied to both life and leadership.
I have had the pleasure of seeing exceptional leadership first-hand. These experiences gave me the opportunity to study and practise the qualities I deeply valued. After moving countries, hearing public speakers and seeing leaders across industries in action strengthened my curiosity about self-reflection, human motivation and the connections we build.
I remain a practising leader with my current team, continuing to learn and apply what I share. My aspiration is to help others deepen their self-awareness and find a sense of purpose they can carry into their work, relationships and everyday lives.
